Thiruvananthapuram: Private deemed universities continue to impose an exorbitant fee for PG medical courses for the year 2018, despite the apex court issuing orders earlier, for regulation of prohibitive fee in medical colleges run by the private deemed universities.

In June 2017, the Madras High Court in an attempt to curtail deemed university run private colleges from imposing high fee had given a directive to the UGC and HRD ministry to set up a fee regulation committee to keep a check on fees for MBBS, MD, MS and other courses offered by these colleges.

The apex court in May 2016 has in a ruling stated that the state could regulate admission, fix fee, as well as, lay down other regulatory mechanisms that promote merit and curbs commercialization in institutions of higher learning.

Following the court order, the Central government has asked the University Grants Commission (UGC) to set up a fee regulating committee to keep a check on the tuition fee being charged for various medical courses being offered by deemed university run colleges. However, no uniformity in fee has yet to be implemented at any of the colleges that come under the deemed universities reports

The counseling process for the MD, MS courses to the meritorious candidates in the NEET Medical PG 2018 will start next month.

Following are some of the deemed university colleges and their fee structures:

  • KS Hegde Medical College, Mangalore, NITTE Deemed university, for MD General Medicine, Fee: Rs 24 lakhs; MS Ophthalmology, MD Radiology, MS Orthopedics, it is Rs 24 lakhs, Rs 28 lakhs and Rs 28 lakhs respectively.

  • Amrita Medical College, Kochi, Amrita Deemed University, the annual fee for 2018 for various MD and MS courses are between 25 and 28 lakhs.
