Karur Medical College to be functional by next year, 150 MBBS seats to be added

Karur: The new Government Medical College coming up at Gandhigramam in Karur by September next year is being provided an infrastructure announced by the Transport Minister, M.R.Vijayabhaskar on Tuesday.


Last year after the Supreme court had granted Karur Medical College construction clearance the Directorate of Medical Education was handed over 17.49 acres at Sanapiratti for construction of the Medical College by the Municipality.


S. Revathi, Dean, Karur Medical College, had then said that all hurdles had been removed, and the Sanapirati site had now been officially transferred and was to be controlled by the DME. This she said would lead to the site being handed over handed over to the Public Works Department for carrying out the planned construction.

Speaking to reporters after a closed-door meeting with Collector T. Anbalagan and officials to review the progress on infrastructural development in the college prior to the oncoming Medical Council of India team, Mr.Vijayabhaskar expressed satisfaction on the way the construction was progressing on the 17.45-acre site.


The construction has been sanctioned at an estimated Rs. 269.59 crore.


Rs. 75.79 crore has been sanctioned to build classrooms with a plinth area of 3.20 lakh sq ft. An 800-bedded hospital is to be attached to the medical college, whose construction costs are estimated at Rs.122.79 crore. The student hostel is to cost another Rs.71 crore.


"A team from the Medical Council of India is expected to visit soon to examine the infrastructure being created for the college. Steps are being taken to provide all the necessary facilities at the hospital and also appoint an adequate number of doctors and teaching professionals. All efforts are on to complete the works and get approval for admissions by September next year," Mr.Vijayabhaskar said to the Hindu.


Geetha, MLA, Krishnarayapuram, Edwin Joe, Director of Medical Education, S. Surya Prakash, District Revenue Officer, and Rosy Vennilla, Dean, Karur Government Medical College, were the officials who attended the review meeting.


The college with construction moving at pace will Admissions to the college happening will also start taking place soon with the Dean, Karur Rosy Vennila, having already submitted a proposal to the Directorate which shall be forwarded to the MCI. 150 students are to be admitted in the college once the proposal is through.
