HUBBALI: The Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital (KIMS),having worked on the infrastructural and other necessary requirements under the Medical Council of India(MCI) guidelines is confident about getting a 200 MBBS seat approval for the next academic year.

An institute of repute with a track record in the field of medical academics, KIMS already has an approval for a hundred and fifty seats for the MBBS course and is now making attempts to have the number increased by another fifty.

A recent survey by the MCI team, of facilities available at KIMS, for sanction of seat increase seems to be working in favour of the college authorities. The team is believed to have checked the outpatient, inpatient departments, ICU, operation theatres, and the casualty wing and is believed to have expressed satisfaction on a majority of the issues involved.

Speaking to the Hindu, Dr. Dattatreya Bant, Director KIMS said, ““A four member team paid a two-day visit to the hospital and the college. They were satisfied with 95 per cent of the facilities at the hospital and also the college. We are positive that we will be allowed to increase the intake from 150 to 200.”

A few lacunae pointed out by the team would be done away with within the next few months. It is believed that the visiting MCI team appreciated the quality of medical education being imparted at the institute. However, on the question of shortcomings on the faculty front, the institutional body has urged the college to fill the vacant posts, at its earliest.

Once given the MCI approval KIMS will become the first state run medical institute in North Karnataka with an MBBS seat strength of 200 and rank second after Bengaluru Medical College in the state.
