Karnataka Government to increase stipend of PG Medical students
Bengaluru: The Karnataka Government is moving to increase the stipend of Post Graduate Medical students from the academic year 2019-20.
Confirmation to this effect was recently made by Department of Medical Education official who told the daily the New Indian Express that the increase in stipend would range between Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 per month. This indeed would bring a sense of relief to PG medical aspirants who are going to pay a much higher fee for their eduacation at both private and government medical colleges.
The Medical Dialogues team earlier reported that fees for Post-Graduate (PG) courses hiked by 15 percent at private medical colleges and as much as 5 times in the government medical colleges. This decision of massive fee hike aims to meet the fund requirements of the state-run medical colleges so that the quality of medical education can be enhanced and facilities can be extended to medical college employees. Apparently, the state-run medical colleges were suffering from rough financial situations which were bothering the staff at these institutes.

This fee hike was severely opposed by students and various student organisations. However, trying to meet the demands of the objecting medicos, the state government is planning to increase their stipend as well.
An official informed the New Indian Express, "The fee we have increased recently is per year, and the stipend hikes will be monthly. So students need not be upset over the fee hike."
Current the stipend stands at
The stipend will be increased between Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000.
As the model code of conduct due to the elections is on, the department cannot announce the hike in stipend. This stipend is for all PG medical seat students under the government quota or those seeking a seat at a government medical college.
The PG aspirants have welcomed the move. A student informed the daily, "This is a good move, we welcome it. But linking this hike in stipend with the fee hike is not acceptable. The stipend students are getting is for the service they do at government hospitals, and most hospitals are run by PG students."
