Karnataka: 150 MBBS students stare at an uncertain future

Karnataka: 150 MBBS students are staring at an uncertain future as their college, Shridevi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Hospital has not been able to secure MCI recognition.

The students complained that they have already lost a precious year of course, as the classes were not held.

These 150 students got admission as follows- 60-CET, 60-ComedK and 30-management quota. These students have come forward alleging that both the college and the students have kept them in dark.

A media report on the matter quoted a student saying that by the noon of September 29, students got their allotment results by downloading the admission order. "We were in for a rude shock. The order cited the college was under litigation. All students who had got admission via CET tried to go back to their previous medical college but that is not allowed under Karnataka Examination Authority rules," he added. Vishnu alleged the students were misled into believing the college is recognized since KEA included it in the last round of counselling.

The de-approval from MCI came for the academic year 2015-16 because of the noted deficiencies in infrastructure. A legal case was also put up by the council against the college for the same on October 16, 2015.

Only later, the apex court received a plea from the students, who insisted on resuming the classes at the institute. Post SC’s intervention on the matter, Karnataka High Court took hold of the matter. HC then decided to relocate the students to other colleges. Now, permission is awaited from the state govt on the matter of shifting the students.

In the interim, the college also approached HC to ask the court for a provisional permission to grant admission to students. This was reportedly done on September 28. However, HC directed the government, KEA, and the institute to keep the students informed on the matter. In other works, keep the students apprised of the status quo.

A student on the other hand implied in his statement, that they were in continuous touch with the DME over the matter on any new court order. They were accessing the court’s order on the KEA website. However, students still expected DME to have kept them informed about the college being under litigation; therefore, avoiding any such situation for us.

Dr Raman Hulinaykar, MD of the institute in his statement implied that according to the recent update by SC, the matter of the college will be heard in the court along with cases of other medical colleges from India. There are 50 other medical colleges who don’t have a recognition from MCI . MCI has not visited the college premise for a re-inspection yet.
