KAP Viswanatham GMC gets MCI nod for 4 MD Psychiatry seats

KAP Viswanatham Government Medical College will offer a total of 4 PG medical seats in Psychiatry for the next academic year.


Tiruchi: In a boost to PG medical seats, the KAP Viswanatham Government Medical College (KAPVGMC) attached to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) has received Medical Council of India's (MCI) approval to offer three more PG medical seats in Psychiatry for the academic year 2020-21. With this, the medical college will offer a total of 4 PG medical seats in Psychiatry for the next academic year.


Confirmation to this effect has been given by the Dean of KAPVGMC, A Arshiya Begum to TH, during an event to observe World Mental Health Day in here. The occasion was graced by the presence of R. Yeganathan, Medical Superintendent, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital, assistant and associate professors of the psychiatry department and other departments.


As per recent MCI data, there were a total of 1916 applications to start/increase PG Medical Seats in various medical colleges across the country for the academic year 2020-21. Tamil Nadu stood third highest in terms of applications with a total of 33 medical colleges inclusive of 17 government medical colleges and 16 private medical colleges (including trust setups) applying for the addition of PG Medical Seats.

The MCI approval for additional PG medical seats in Psychiatry in KAPVGMC came following an inspection conducted by MCI. Presently, the medical college has 86 seats for various PG medical courses. In 2016, the medical college was granted permission to have one MD (psychiatry) seat from the academic year 2017.

The KAP Viswanatham Government Medical College (KAPVGMC) attached to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) was recently inspected the Medical Council of India (MCI after the medical college sought to begin PG medical courses including ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat/Otolaryngology), MD forensic medicine, Bio-Chemistry.
