Trichy: The Medical Council of India’s has given an approving nod to 2 MS post graduate seats in the Department of Ophthalmology for the academic year 2018-19.

The apex body’s recognition of 2 seats comes in lieu of a 30-bedded facility. In MGMGH, the ophthalmology department has a 32 beds facility, outpatient ward, speciality clinics for glaucoma, retinopathy of prematurity, squint, cornea, and retina

An approval for a postgraduate course in ophthalmology for this academic year at the KAP Viswanatham government medical college (KAPVGMC) has now led to demands to better the infrastructural facilities of the department by the granting of more space to it. The college is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi memorial government hospital (MGMGH).

There are also two operation theatres, an eye bank and several types of equipment besides an ophthalmologists team. Though these facilities were accommodated in a dilapidated building, leaving little or no space for speciality clinics.

The absence or lack of space led to reduced chances of hospitals providing specialized treatment to needy patients. Which in turn led to these needy patients turning to private hospitals.

MGMGH as observed is in need of some more important equipment and facilities at the speciality clinics. Ten government hospitals had been functioning in taluks in the districts of Trichy. Eye disorder treatments like glaucoma and some other were found to be unavailable in these facilities except for headquarters government hospital at Manapparai where the eye tension can be checked. The ophthalmology department had proposed building extension to facilitate treatment.

Dean of MGMGH, Dr Anitha revealed that another floor coming up on the existing infrastructure was a likelihood. “The speciality clinics have been functioning regularly. The process to start the expansion of the building will begin soon,” the dean told TOI.
