Kalaburagi: 46 aspirants who had been granted seats under government quota in the second round of counselling at the Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Medical College Kalaburagi city on Thursday by the Karnataka Examinations Authority(KEA), staged a protest when declined admission by the college authorities. The parents and students gathered in front of the dean's office and sat on strike demanding admission to first-year undergraduate medical courses in the college, as per the order copy issued by KEA.

Speaking to the Hindu a parent, said despite candidates possessing copies of the Admission Order downloaded from the KEA website, the college authorities declined on the plea that they had no communication to this effect from the KEA.

Thursday (August 24) was the last day for reporting to the colleges. “If the admission formalities are not completed by Thursday evening, the chances of us getting admission this year would become bleak.”

Nagaraj, in-charge Dean, ESIC Medical College, of that 100-seat intake allowed by the Medical Council of India, 40 seats had been allotted to CET students, 15 were reserved for all-India quota and 45 kept aside for Insured People. According to the Dean under the State (CET) quota, only 9 students took admission and 31 seats were vacant, similarly, 4 seats were vacant under the all-India quota, and 11 seats were vacant under the seats allotted for the Insured category.

Mr. Nagaraj said that KEA could fill up the vacant seats under All-India and CET quota. However, those for Insured People could not be changed to a different category; He said the KEA could solve the problem by allotting the seats in various Medical Colleges in the third round, reports The Hindu.
