Warangal: The Medical Council of India(MCI), has been sent a proposal seeking a 51 PG seat increase by the management of Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) for the academic year 2018-19. The college management is hopeful of getting an MCI sanction for a minimum of 34 seats according to recent media reports.

The college authority is now planning to introduce Psychiatry and Radiotherapy courses with a seat intake of 4 in each of the planned new departments. A proposal in this regard has also been sent to the apex education regulator. The management also wants to increase 2 seats each in radiology, ENT and DVL courses, 12 in anesthesia, 6 in pediatrics, and 13 in MD gynecology. A proposal for a 4 seat increase in other departments is also in the pipeline.

The present total seat intake at Kakatiya Medical College numbers at 110. The recent inclusion of a professor, associate professor and assistant professor in the newly set up department of psychiatry is likely to win it 4 PG seats in the stream.

Despite a few prevailing infrastructural shortcomings, the management is confident of making up for them before the forthcoming inspection. It is also confident of the support from Directorate of Medical Education (DME), resulting in seat sanctions by the Council.

Kakatiya Medical College, Principal, Dr. V Chandrashekar, speaking to Telangana Today, said he was confident of the education regulator clearing the Kakatiya Medical College proposals, as it was one of the oldest government institutions of the state.

"We sent the proposals only after assessing the availability of infrastructure at the college. Considering this, I hope at least 34 PG seats will be sanctioned to the college," he told TOI.
