Jharkhand Cabinet nod to Conversion of two District Hospitals into Medical Colleges, details

Ranchi: With the aim of augmenting the medical education sector of the state, the Jharkhand government is going to upgrade two district hospitals into medical colleges. The state cabinet has given its nod for the same.

The decision was taken in a recent cabinet meeting held on 13th January. The proposal to have two new medical colleges in the state was presented by the State Department of Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare.

The up-gradation will be done on Chaibasa and Koderma district hospitals. These medical establishments will be advanced into medical college hospitals.

Under phase II of Centre's scheme to construct medical colleges, approval has been given to establishing a new medical college in Karma area of Koderma with a budget of Rs 328.41 crore along with up-gradation of the adjoining Sadar hospital to a 300 beds hospital. Medical college which will be coming up in Chaibasa will see a budget of Rs 314.35 crore.

Sukhdev Singh, the Additional Chief Secretary of the state Department of Planning cum Finance, informed TOI that the cost for these projects will be borne by the Center and state on a 60:40 ratio. "The Union government will disburse approximately Rs 300 crore while the rest will be borne by the state," Singh added.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the state government, in its endeavour to improve the administrations at government-run medical colleges, finally addressed the issue of obsolete service rules for the appointment and promotion of medical teachers.

Following the recommendation made by the Medical Council of India (MCI), the state government issued a notification stating that only the senior-most and the second senior-most Professors will be eligible for the post of Principal and Hospital Superintendent of medical colleges for a period of three years.
