Jammu & Kashmir: New Government Medical College to come up in Baramulla with 100 MBBS seats

Expectantly, the first batch of 100 MBBS students will begin from June 2019.

Baramulla: In order to give a boost to the medical education sector in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, a new medical college with 100 MBBS seats is being constructed by the state government in Baramulla district.


The construction is reportedly in full swing and will be completed before the commencement of this academic year. Expectantly, the first batch of 100 MBBS students will begin from June 2019.


Speaking to the news agency ANI, Dr Javed Choudhary, Principal of the medical college. Baramulla, informed, "Staff recruitment will be done at different levels. We will, hopefully, start the first batch of 100 MBBS students from June this year, as soon as we get the permission letter. Students will be selected on the basis of a Common Entrance Test."


ANI reports that the new medical college with 100 MBBS seats will not only benefit medical students of Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora districts of North Kashmir but also provide better medical facilities to the people of the region. The construction of the medical college, which started a few years ago, is currently in full swing. Once ready, it is set to cater to around 1.70 lakh population of North Kashmir.


The medical college will comprise an academic block and a residential block.

The Union government has approved the construction of medical colleges in five districts of Jammu and Kashmir. Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that with the completion of the new medical colleges in Rajouri, Doda, Kathua, Anantnag and Baramulla, 500 MBBS students would be annually added to the overall capacity of the course in the state.


Anantnag's Medical college's construction will be completed by the next year.

The Union ministry of Health and Family Welfare has sanctioned five new medical colleges in the state at a cost of Rs 189 crore each — out of which Rs 139 crore is for civil works and Rs 50 crore for machinery and equipment.


The department has initiated steps to provide infrastructure, equipment and human resource in these colleges as per the Medical Council of India (MCI) guidelines to start the first batch of MBBS admissions next year.
