Jaipur: Strike for medical college enters 39th day

Jaipur: The locals under the banner of Medical College Kriyanustan Committee (MCKC) have now sought the intervention of the Chief Minister to look into their long-standing demand of setting up a medical college in the Jaipur district, Panikoili. The indefinite mass dharna (sit-in protest) by the Committee has entered the 40 day.

The locals have been demanding a medical college and hospital in Panikoili for a long time due to the area’s easy access to every resident and the availability of over 200 acres of land for the establishment of the medical facility. In view of the same, the committee had approached several authorities in the past but after seeing no action, they initiated the dharna.

According to Dharanidhar Ghadei, Convener of the Medical College Kriyanustan Committee, “Panikoili is an ideal location for setting up the proposed Government medical college as it is located in the middle of the district and is well connected by road and rail. People of neighbouring Bhadrak and Keonjhar will benefit if the medical college and hospital is set up here.”

He said more than 200 acres of government land is available at Panikoili for the proposed government medical college and hospital, he added.

The protest is currently been supported by several organisations and NGOs. The residents of the nearby districts are also supporting the committee’s valid demand, as per a recent report by The New Indian Express.

Earlier in August, the committee had staged a mass dharna before the office of Kalinga Nagar additional district magistrate at Vyas Nagar town.

Since the State Government had decided to upgrade the district headquarters hospital in Jajpur town into a Super Speciality hospital, the proposed medical college and hospital for the district should be set up in Panikoili in the larger interest of people, the committee had told TNIE.

MCMKC had also submitted a memorandum to Union Health Minister J P Nadda and Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan to look into their demand. However, no action was taken to set up the medical college in Panikoili, which led the committee to sit on the indefinite dharna.
