J&K: New medical college with 100 MBBS seats under construction; to be functional by next year

According to the JKPCC official, 'We have completed the medical college project worth Rs 53. 65 crores. All these facilities will be completed by the next year'.

Anantnag: A new medical college with 100 MBBS seats is being constructed by the government of Jammu and Kashmir in Anantnag. The construction will be completed by the next year. The medical college consists of girl's and boy's hostel including other facilities.

The central government has also sanctioned five new medical colleges at Rajouri, Doda, Kathua, Anantnag and Baramulla a few years ago. The construction work has already started in Anantnag and Baramulla.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that with the completion of the new medical colleges in Rajouri, Doda, Kathua, Anantnag and Baramulla, 500 MBBS students would be annually added to the overall capacity of the course in the state.

Their main aim is not only to serve the medical students of South Kashmir, but also to provide good medical service to the local people. The project is being undertaken by Jammu and Kashmir Projects Construction Corporation (JKPCC).

The estimated cost of the total project is around Rs 139 crores. The project is undertaken in 156 canals with residential quarters of the faculties. According to the JKPCC official, 'We have completed the project worth Rs 53. 65 crores. All these facilities will be completed by the next year'.

Local residents are hopeful that once the construction will be completed.

Earlier, Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board had issued advertisements for 1235 posts for five new medical colleges in the state. 247 posts under 41 different advertisement items, referred by the Health and Medical Education Department had been advertised for each new Medical College in Rajouri, Doda, Kathua, Anantnag and Baramulla.

As per the Medical Council of India (MCI) norms, nursing staff strength of 175 is required during the first year of establishment of a new medical college. The State Administrative Council (SAC), had accorded sanction to the creation of 675 posts of nursing staff for the newly created 5 government medical colleges.

The existing strength was not sufficient to meet the MCI requirement and a need was felt to create 675 posts.
