Issue of High Examination Fee at AIIMS Rishikesh raised in Parliament

New Delhi: The relatively high examination fee charged by AIIMS Rishikesh as compared to other AIIMS including flagship AIIMS New Delhi, recently became a matter of discussion in the ongoing parliament session, when Lok Sabha Member Shri Deepak Baij, asked the Minister of Health where whether the Government has taken note of different fee amount being charged for Post Graduate (PG) Medical Examination in different All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) of the country.

Responding to the questions,Shri Ashwani Kumar Choubey, Minister of State, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare confirmed about the differential fee, informing that while the PG medical examination fee in AIIMS Delhi is Rs 200 while the corresponding figure for exam is Rs 15,000 in AIIMS, Rishikesh

In the written reply the Minister informed that all AIIMS are autonomous organisations and medical examination fee has been approved by Academic Committee and Governing Body of the Institute and it is decided by the respective Institutes with the approval of their Academic Committee/Standing Finance Committee/Governing Body, keeping in view the Institute specific factors and cost considerations.

"The fee of Rs. 15,000/- is charged for PG Medical courses for examination during three of course including internal assessment. The fee structure has been approved by the Academic Committee and Governing Body of the Institute." the reply stated for AIIMS rishkesh specifically. The minister also ifnormed apart from AIIMS Rishikesh, a relatively higher pg medical examination fee is also charged at AIIMS Jodhpur.

Answering about the differential fee at various centres the minister gave the following pointers

  • AIIMS New Delhi conducts common PG Medical Entrance Examination for all new AIIMS and the candidates pay the entrance examination fee to AIIMS New Delhi which is same irrespective of the AIIMS Institute they apply for.

  • Six new AIIMS except for AIIMS Rishikesh and AIIMS Jodhpur charge the same fee for PG medical examination as that of AIIMS New Delhi.

  • The comparative position of amount of examination fee charged by AIIMS Delhi and AIIMS Rishikesh is brought out in the table at the Annexure.

  • Higher Medical examination fee for PG exam in comparison to AIIMS New Delhi is charged from students AIIMS Rishikesh and AIIMS Jodhpur.

  • All six new AIIMS at Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur, and Rishikesh, where PG courses are conducted, are autonomous bodies.

  • The medical examination fee is decided by the respective Institutes with the approval of their Academic Committee/Standing Finance Committee/Governing Body, keeping in view the Institute specific factors and cost considerations.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the differential examination fee at AIIMS Rishikesh had been a matter of concern for AIIMS medicos , who while opposing against the irregularities in fees charged for PG medical final examination at the Rishikesh branch, had written to the Union Health Ministry.
