Puducherry: An incomplete waiting list of students furnished by the Centralized Admission Committee (Centac)led to Thirty-three postgraduate medical seats remaining vacant at the Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (MGMC & RI) in the academic year 2017-18. According to the college Dean, M Ravishankar totally incomplete waiting list of students without their contact numbers, communication addresses and emails, was furnished.

MGMC & RI is affiliated to Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, a deemed university.

Responding to the notice served by the Medical Council of India (MCI) asking the college to discharge (remove from the rolls of the institution) 11 students (eight postgraduate and three diploma), admitted last academic year in gross violation of rules and regulations, the College dean revealed that 5 were admitted from the Puducherry government's waiting list , 3 were PG Neet qualifiers and had paid Centac counselling fees though had not attended the counselling, while the 3 remaining had also cleared the NEET exam.

"…the waiting list sent by Centac for PG admission for the year 2017-18 is totally incomplete as there are no details like contact phone numbers of the students, communication addresses and their emails. Because of this, we were not able to contact many students from the waiting list and in the last hour, we had to admit three students qualified in the PG Neet to avoid the seats getting lapsed. In spite of this, 33 PG seats remained vacant," elaborated the Dean to TOI.

He further spoke of an SC order that carried instructions for the Director General, Medical Education to take responsibility of allotting students from the all-India Neet list in the order of merit to the unaided medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh. This he said was to be done keeping public interest in mind, as 41.95% of postgraduate medical seats remained vacant for the academic year 2018-19.

"From the direction (of the Supreme Court), it is clear that if there are any vacant seats at the end of counselling, PG Neet qualified students can be admitted on merit basis. These students have been admitted only against the vacant seats before the cut-off date on the last day of the admission so that the seats do not lapse," the dean added.

The Dean appealed for withdrawal of the MCI notice keeping the larger interest of PG students already admitted and pursuing the course in mind.
