IGIMS Patna gains MCI approval to commence MCh Gastro Surgery with 3 seats from this academic year

Patna: The Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Patna (IGIMS Patna) has been given the permission to begin the first Master of Chirurgiae (MCh) course with 3 seats in Gastro-Surgery by the Medical Council of India (MCI).


The medical college will begin its academic session in MCh Gastro-Surgery from July this year 2019-20.


Dr Manish Mandal, IGIMS superintendent-cum-head of Gastro-Surgery department, informed the TOI, "The Gastro-Surgery department had applied for the MCI permission in the month of December last year to start the MCh course in Gastro-Surgery for which the inspection was conducted on 3rd May."


The MCI team, satisfied with the facility and infrastructure to begin the course, gave its recognition for the same.


At present, the institution possesses 11 MCh seats, which include four seats in urology and two seats each in neurosurgery and paediatric surgery' and '10 seats in Doctorate of medicine (DM) which were earlier allotted.

He further informed that the department had fulfilled the criteria of a number of faculty members.


He stated to TOI, , "We have one professor, two associate professors and two assistant professors," adding that the department has again applied for more seats as MCI has come up with a new norm according to which his department can get five seats.


The IGIMS is an autonomous institution which was set up at par with the level and standards of AIIMS, New Delhi. It is the only superspecialist institute of Bihar and tops the hierarchy in the patient referral chain. It is said to be the provider of best medical academics in Bihar in MBBS, PG and PhD courses.


The institute holds seven seats in Master in Surgery and over 20 seats in postgraduate courses. It is affiliated to University Grants Commission (UGC), Medical Council of India (MCI) and Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
