IGGMC faces MCI derecognition, if paucities not overcome

Nagpur: Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) will look de-recognition of 150 MBBS seats in the face, if it does not overcome its infrastructural, faculty and equipment paucities, before the forthcoming Medical Council of India inspection. It has been made clear to the college authorities that if the vacant faculty positions are not filled, and the MRI and CAT scan machines not installed, the recognition to the 150 seats would be hard to come by, after this forthcoming inspection of the college.

Dr Anuradha Srikhande, Dean IGGMCH who raised the issue of de-recognition with Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, was categorically assured by the latter that he would not let such a situation arise, as he would ensure that neither the recognition nor the PG seats are lost to the institution. However, the fact remains that the deficiencies will have to be done away with before the impending inspection if the Chief Minister’s word is to be kept

Meanwhile, the college authorities have received a reminder much in tune with what has been stated above.

The major infrastructural deficiencies that call for immediate attention include the absence of MRI and CAT scan machines. “College has got administrative approval for the two machines but there have been no budgetary provisions for procuring them until now. MCI has been relaxing the terms for many years and now the college needs to install them,” Dr Shrikhande told

The MCI in its letter has also indicated to the 10.6% deficiency of teachers as against the MCI stipulation allowing a mere 5% shortfall.

The letter gives the elaborate faculty shortfall- as follows:

Physiology department -no professor;

9 teacher posts vacant, these include- an associate professor post each in surgery and orthopedics and 7 assistant professor positions(lecturers)

The vacancies in this category include surgery-2; anesthesia-2; orthopedics -2 and medicine -1

Though there are no posts of tutors available in any of the government medical colleges of the state, the MCI calls for the creation of 30 posts in pre and para-clinical subjects. Rerouting posts from clinical to para-clinical has also been recommended

If the college continues to do without MCI and CAT scan machines, it will also have to do without 2 PG seats in radiology. The college also lacks a DSA and an X-ray machine. Despite administrative approval for these, money for procurement has not been released, yet.

Laboratories and teaching rooms in the administrative building need to be redone at the college. Though administrative approval has been granted, there is no provision of money for the Rs77 crore building which will house this infrastructure.
