Hyderabad Varsity moves SC to fill up 75 Convenor Quota MBBS Seats at Malla Reddy Medical College

Hyderabad: Following the last minute controversial Medical Council of India approval to 150 MBBS admissions at Malla Reddy Institute of Medical Sciences (MRIMS), the varsity the medical college is affiliated with; Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS) has moved the Supreme Court by filing a Special Leave Petition (SLP) seeking permission to fill 75 convenor (government quota) MBBS seats.

While the medical college got the Medical Council of India's (MCI) approval, the MBBS admissions still suffered, as the college received MCI's approval to admit students at the last minute, when the admission process for MBBS seats for the academic year 2018-19 had gotten over. This has put the varsity in a precarious position as it does not know whether it is entitled to do counselling or not.

The Malla Reddy Medical College has a total of 150 seats, of which, 75 seats are the convenor quota and remaining fall under B and C categories of Management and Non-Resident Indian (NRI) quota. While the college could fill the B and C category seats on its own, the counselling for Category A, that is convenor quota has to be done by the Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences, the university to which Malla Reddy Medical College is affiliated with.

Unsure how it should proceed in the present circumstances, the Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences has sought the Supreme Court's intervention into the matter of MBBS admissions.

"The university had expressed its helplessness as the Supreme Court guidelines stipulate the universities across the country to start the academic session of the medical courses from August 1, of year," said the official from KNRUHS.

When contacted, the KNRUHS Vice-Chancellor Dr B Karunakar Reddy told The Hans India that if the university would not act, then the State would be at loss. "Hence, the university has filed an SLP in the apex court, seeking its permission to take up the process of filling the seats under the convenor quota. It would take a couple of days and we are waiting for the results of the SLP to take further action," he informed.

Recently, the medical college got encircled with a number of allegations claiming irregularities in the admission process that the college administration is selling MBBS convenor seats under the cover of getting late MCI's recognition on the last date of counselling. This non-clarity of when and if, the counselling will be conducted, made MBBS aspirants as well as a doctor's association anxious, which led to the allegations.

At that time, Dr Reddy, KNRUHS refuted such claims and informed, "The University has already approached the Supreme Court to get an extension on the counselling."
