Faridkot:The long-standing war between the Medical Council of India and the Chintpurni Medical College and Hospital, Pathankot over compliance issues related to infrastructural and faculty deficiencies has finally come to an end with the Supreme Court asking the Council to encash the Rs. 10 crore bank guarantee, by way of penalty. The court has ordered the encashment for the college’s failure to meet MCI norms and compliance of deficiency.

The Supreme Court had given the college permission to admit 150 students for its MBBS course in September 2014, with a promise that it would come up to the council’s expectations after the college gave an undertaking for compliance of the same.

The college had at that time given a Rs 10 crore undertaking which the college had deposited with the MCI, saying that it could be forfeited by way of penalty if it failed to meet the MCI norms.

With the High Court having issued an order in Aakansha Mahajan and others versus the Union of India and others on September 8, ‘allowing the shifting of all MBBS students of 2014 batch of Chintpurni college to other colleges due to lack of facilities, the MCI has the liberty to encash the bank guarantee,’ reads the Supreme Court order passed this week.

The order has been received by Baba Farid University of Health Sciences here.

Due to infrastructural & faculty deficiencies at Chintpurni, the MCI and the Union Government had denied the renewal of permission for admission to this college in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15.

However, the permission was given on SC orders in September 2014 reports Tribune.
