HP: 14 resident doctors of Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College Tanda are staring at a difficult situation after MCI has refused to grant recognition to their course. Five out of the 14 students have completed their MD in radiology at the said college.

MCI has not granted recognition for the course as it observed lack of equipment and facilities. MCI also noted more deficiencies during inspection at departments of pharmacology and pathology.

MD residents implied that they have not been able to apply for jobs since their MD degrees have not yet received recognition from MCI. The 5 residents who have completed their MD in radiology belong to the two batches (2011-14 and 2012-15). Himachal Pradesh University have already awarded degrees to the students.

In addition they implied that it is due to lack of sufficient attention of the medical college in time that we are in the thick of the matter today. The college admitted students on a continuous basis. Now, resident doctors are staring at a situation of radiology department facing closure. The authorities should be held responsible for this situation.

The medical college authorities and the Health Department claimed that they were aware of the problems of the students and were trying to make up for the deficiencies pointed out by the MCI.

Principal Dr Anil Chauhan said to Tribune that the college had already started the medical journal in radiology recognised by WHO, adding that tenders had been floated for the equipment.

Chauhan said they had worked on the shortcomings pointed out in the departments and had communicated the same to the authorities. He said: “MD degree courses get recognition retrospectively and this is norm in other government institutions as well."
