HC:Re-shifting orders for 150 Pathankot students of Chintpurni Medical College
Patiala: Pathankot’s Chintpurni Medical College’s failure to get recognition from the MCI has cast a cloud on its credibility. The latest blow came in the form of transfer orders issued by department of medical education and research for the 150 first batch students of the institution to other government colleges. This has been done after a High Court scrutiny of the merit list.
However, when a few of the students challenged the earlier criteria of selection as having been abrupt and favoring students lower in the merit list, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on May 6 directed the department of medical education and research to hold exclusive counseling sessions for these students.
The department came up with a fresh list based on the old entrance test marks, which was granted High Court approval on 12th May . Medical Education Secretary, Hussan Lal, speaking to HT, on the High Court consent said, “Following this, the department approved the re-shifting process on Thursday and directed the colleges concerned to complete it at the earliest.”
With the first batch of the college having won their legal battle, the second batch consisting of 101 students have also sought High Court intervention for a shift to other colleges. Their matter is to come up for a hearing on June 7, when the MCI and the state government will take a decision on their fates. Fearing the validity of their degrees the students followed in the footsteps of the 1st batch.
The long and painful waiting of the first batch of Chintpurni has come to an end. “Students can now focus on their studies after two painful years of legal battle,” said the parent of a medical student from Ludhiana.
The first batches merit list grants 30 Pathankot students each to Patiala and Amritsar; 19 each to Bathinda (Adesh Institute of Medical Sciences) and Amritsar (Guru Ravidas Institute of Medical Sciences); 16 to Banur (Gian Sagar College), 15 to Faridkot, and 11 and 10, respectively, to Ludhiana’s Christian Medical College and Dayanand Medical College.
