Kochi: The Palakkad Government Medical College will be able to admit students into its MBBS courses for the academic year 2018-19, as the Kerala High Court has granted permission for the same to the state government.

The court has also approved of the government conducting the second round of counselling in the all India merit quota, as well as commence counselling for the whole state.

The court has passed an order in response to a petition filed by the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribe and Backward Welfare Department, which runs the college reports the Hindu.

Started in 2014-15 with an annual intake of a 100 students per year the college was granted renewal permissions by the Medical Council of India in subsequent years.

In 2017, the college was denied permission to admit students when an executive committee appointed by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Department had visited the college in December and pointed at certain deficiencies like shortage of teaching staff and resident doctors. These shortcomings led to the Council taking a decision to prevent the college from further intake of students for the academic session for the year 2018-19

The Principal Secretary, however, claimed that of the 30 drawbacks pointed at, compliance had been met with for most and that the remaining shortcomings would soon be overcome.

In an earlier story done by medical dialogues both Government Medical Colleges at Palakkad and Manjeri had been declined permission of admissions for their MBBS seats for the academic year 2018-19 on account of several deficiencies including faculty shortage found by the Medical Council of India. This is for the 2nd time that the Council has declined admission permission to the two colleges due to deficiencies prevailing. The first was in the year 2017-18.
