Ludhiana: The Punjab Government and the Gian Sagar Medical College(GSMC) management have been directed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday to have a meeting on Wednesday, to discuss issues being faced by the institution.

The directive was issued in the midst of a resumed hearing by the court on a plea submitted by students demanding resumption of classes immediately.

The 10 petitioning students stated that they were given admission on the basis of their NEET merits/PMET merit for the academic session 2016-2017 and had attended all classes, till January 2017.According to the students the entire teaching faculty and paramedical staff went on strike thereafter, on the issue of non payment of salaries which has led to disruption of classes, ever since.

During the hearing on Tuesday, the management informed the court that the old set of trustees had been replaced by new ones, as the old nominees had resigned. The management also said that the new trustees were ready to pool in funds for the smooth operations of the medical college, which included settling of previous liabilities including salaries, reports HT.

The state advocate general Atul Nanda suggested that an affidavit be submitted by the trustees to disclose the names of the new appointees and also clarify whether Harsatinder Singh the man communicating with the government was actually an appointed trustee or not.

Seeking the college’s response, the court sought details of the amount that the trustees would be ready to invest and the measures that could be undertaken by the college to remove deficiencies. The next hearing is fixed for May 1.
