Hassan: The Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences(HIMS), seeking permanent affiliation from the Medical Council of India(MCI), was paid a surprise visit by the MCI officials recently. The team was there to inspect infrastructural facilities and faculty strength of the institute.

The visiting team comprised of members from Darjeeling, Mumbai and Coimbatore, informed Dr K Shankar, Medical Superintendent , HIMS.

“The MCI has the practice of visiting the college without prior notice. They suddenly arrived this morning and reviewed the facilities available and the faculty strength. We have sought permanent affiliation for the institute. The institute is hopeful of getting the permanent affiliation”.

HIMS has now got the MCI approval to admit 150 MBBS students for the academic year 2017-18.

Interestingly, the institute two days prior to the inspection had been facing drinking water problems due to technical problems in the supply network. Water supply in the face of technical hurdles was withheld by the Hassan City Municipal Council.

The institute had to manage with the available stock. To water in the washroom taps created problems for the patients and their attendants. The 750 bedded hospital has a heavy footfall on a daily basis.

“We had a problem in getting water for two days. Somehow we managed with the available water and also purchased water from private tankers. Recently, we got a borewell drilled on the campus and a motor will be installed soon,” Dr. Shankar told the Hindu.

The surprise inspection had the authorities also call back faculty on leave.
