Haryana: health department says no more to private medical colleges

Haryana : State health department had earlier expressed its concern over no control over private medical colleges and varsities. However, this time they have made a decision to not-allow any more of such autonomous bodies’ a.k.a private medical institution to be opened in the state, going forward.

This has been recently concluded in a meeting of the health department and the medical education and research department. Still, the matter requires the state government’s final nod.

As quoted by Express, Health Minister Anil Vij said, “The state government has no control over the private medical universities and deemed universities and they are playing with the future of students. Our department has taken an in-principle decision not to allow private and deemed medical universities. The decision now needs government approval”.

It was further discussed during the meeting that the for any medical college to open in the state in future, the health department will now assess the worth of the organisation behind the proposed project and also, seek bonds close to worth Rs 50 crore to be signed between them.

This is a step forward to secure the students future. Apparently, the health department is now more cautious after the recent closure of operations of Gold Field Institute of Medical Sciences and Research at Faridabad this year. It reportedly led to a loss of 100-medical seats in the state. Regarding the matter, it has been further reported that the state department has procured the necessary permission from the Centre and MCI to accommodate students.

There are two existing private medical universities in the state: the Maharishi Markandeshwar University in Mullana and the SGT University in Gurgaon. It has also been decided that all existing medical colleges in Haryana would now be affiliated to Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS), Rohtak.

Tribune reported that the Haryana Government is contemplating withdrawing the status of universities accorded to the private medical colleges in the state during the previous regime in view of complaints of irregularities. The government has also decided not to grant status of university to any medical college in future.

In addition, a decision is also pending with regards to begin a six-month Radiology course for government doctors, at PGIMS Rohtak, in view of the acute shortage of radiologists.
