Haryana: CM Khatter inaugurates Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College

CM Khatter while inaugurating the hospital and OPD buildings of KCGMCH, announced the setting up of a civil hospital for the smooth functioning of national health programs.

Karnal: The Haryana Chief Minister, Manohar Lal Khatter in a concentrated drive to improve healthcare facilities and medical education in the state has announced the development of a civil hospital in the old building of the Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College and Hospital (KCGMCH) and the setting up of a medical college in each district. He stated that the process to set up medical colleges in Jind and Bhiwani was underway. He also announced plans of setting up of a medical science university in Karnal, costing Rs 3,000 crore. He revealed construction work to be in progress on a 710-bedded National Cancer Institute in Jhajjar district.

CM, Mr. Khatter said efforts were also being made to provide world class facilities at Kalpana Chawla Medical college. Best OPD services have been provided in this medical college and hospital he added. The Haryana Chief Minister, disclosed that a medical insurance scheme was to be introduced for the people of the state to enable them to benefit from it, during emergencies.

Karnal has been bereft of a civil hospital, since December 2012, after the old one was merged in Kalpana Chawla Medical college, under the previous government. The staff members of the hospital were also sent on deputation to the the hospital.

Efforts have been on by staff sent on deputation to Kalpana Chawla Medical college and the people of the state to begin a separate civil hospital in Karnal. The HAFED Chairman, Harvinder Kalyan, Health Minister Anil Vij, Mayor Renu Bala Gupta, and the CM were contacted for this initiative.

He spoke of the government developing a civil hospital in the district, but said that temporarily it would be operated from the old building of Kalpana Chawla Medical college.

The citizens of the state welcomed the CM’s decision. “We are happy as the CM has fulfilled our demand and gave us a double delight by opening two buildings of KCGMCH and the civil hospital,” said Mayor, Renu Bala Gupta.

A budget of Rs 3,839 crore has been sanctioned for Health and Family Welfare in 2017-18. A budget for the health sector for 2017-18, has been increased by 15.52 per cent, over 2016-17. The Chief Minister said there was an acute shortage of doctors in the state under the global health services norms,. There are only 14,000 doctors in both public and private sector, against the required 16,000. The shortage could be met only with expansion of medical education, he added.

The state government has been working in a planned manner to set up medical colleges and medical universities, he stated. Rs 450 crore had been spent on the Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College which is being set up over 50 acres of land. With a present capacity of 350 beds, it is likely to increase its bed strength to 650, he added.

He also spoke of a nursing policy being introduced. Nurse and Nurse Midwife Council is being set up for framing rules and conducting examinations for MPHW ANM, and GNM courses. Besides,this he said a paramedical board would be constituted to regulate paramedical education.

The Health Minister, Anil Vij, said efforts had been made to provide world class facilities in KCGMCH . Best OPD services have been provided in this medical college and hospital, added Mr. Vij.

Some countries have expressed interest in working in the field of health and medical field in Haryana and the state government will take appropriate step in this direction
Mr. Vij said all hurdles regarding setting up of a medical college by SGPC at Shahbad have been removed.

The state government plans to would spend Rs 26 crore on improving primary health centers in the state. With improvement in health services provided by the state government, the OPD patient strength has increased by 20 per cent, he told Punjab News Express.
