Gurugram: 25 acres of land earmarked for medical college

Gurugram: 25 acres of land has been earmarked in sector 105 for a medical college by the Municipal Corporation, Gurugram. This comes four months after the Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced that a medical college would be set up in the city. A report to take the process further was submitted to the district administration last week, said officials.

"We have identified the land and informed the deputy commissioner who has to clear the report so that the land can be handed over to the concerned department such as PWD for developing the campus," said Senior Town Planner, MCG, Sudhir Chouhan to the TOI. The corporation can participate in the funding of the project if required, he added.

Mr. Khattar had announced the setting up of a medical college in November following demands from the residents of the city.The demand had come in the absence of proper medical facilities at the Civil Hospital in Gurugram, leading to the economically weaker section travelling to Delhi for treatment at government hospitals like the AIIMS and the Safdarjung Hospital.

An estimated crowd numbering between 1,500 and 2,000 visit Civil Hospital's outpatient department (OPD) everyday. However, in the absence of facilities like burns unit, cochlear implant laboratory, dialysis centre, and electroencephalography (EEG) machine many patients are often referred to the city's private hospitals or government hospitals in Delhi.

Following an inspection at the Civil Hospital in January, Additional Chief Secretary, Health Department, Rajan Kumar Gupta asked the authorities to earmark land for a medical college and revamp the existing civil hospital.
