Ahmadabad : B J Medical College, NHL Municipal Medical College and Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute (GCRI) the three prominent medical colleges in Gujarat have been granted MCI approval for four additional seats in super speciality post graduation courses . The admissions for these seats will open in August.

The four seats include one seat of MCh (Gynaec Oncology) at Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute, one seat of DM (Cardiology) to B J Medical College; one seat of DM ( Cardiology) and one seat in DM (Medical Gastroenterology) at NHL Municipal Medical College.

Responding on the addition of seats, the respective college authorities expressed their joy to Mirror.

With the approval of the course in M.Ch (Gynaec Oncology), GCRI has joined the few group of colleges who offer such super-specialization.

Expressing his elation, GCRI Director Dr R K Vyas said, "This is a moment of immense pride for us.’ Until now, Maharashtra and Karnataka were the only states to have seats in this course. “GCRI has made a great leap with this achievement," He added.

With the addition of super-specialty seats for post graduation, NHL Municipal Medical College has also become the only college in the state to offer a seat in super-specialty of Medical Gastroenterology. College Dean, Dr Pankaj Patel said "Very few colleges offer superspeciality in DM (Medical Gastroenterology) in India. Across the country, there are only 28-30 seats in the course and now, with one seat assigned to our college, we have also become one of the pioneers of this course. NHL is also the first college in Gujarat to grab the seat."

A seat assigned to NHL Municipal Medical College makes it a pioneer of sorts in the course, as well. DM Cardiology seats in NHL have also been raised to two. The college had also applied for seats in Neurology, however, was rejected on a technical issue, informed Dr. Patel.

With the addition of another seat in DM (Cardiology), B J Medical College (attached with U N Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research)will offer a total of nine seats for the course.

It is reported that BJ Medical College had also applied for a hike in seats for two more courses, however, MCI rejected its applications by sending them back to the central government.

Super-specialty can be pursued once a student finishes his or her MS (Master of Surgery) or MD (Master of Medicine). The three colleges had sent applications for a hike in the number of seats in August last year. Following their request, MCI members carried out inspections at their premises between December 2015 and January 2016. The official approval letters, mentioning the increased seats, were received by the three colleges in the last week of June.
