Gujarat: Medical aspirants can look forward to seeking admission in NHL medical college, as MCI has granted permission to the college for offering 100 more MBBS seats this academic year. This will also provide some respite from the NEET pressure the students are currently facing.

NHL medical college will now offer 250 MBBS seats. Sources in state health department have confirmed the news.

The current fee for MBBS course at the college is expected to go up from Rs 3.96 lakh to Rs 4.63 lakh per annum, starting this academic year (2016-17).

With this new development, Ahmedabad will now offer 950 medical seats. BJ Medical College (250), NHL (250), Sola Medical College (150), LG Medical College (150) and Gujarat Cancer Society Medical College (150) make up the total seats offered.

The state of Gujarat in total offers 3,480 medical seats. Admission Committee for Medical and Paramedical Courses (ACMPC) oversees admissions to medical colleges in Gujarat. This includes all state and private medical colleges monitored by ACMPC.

Health department sources have also said to TOI that this year a university near Vadodara is also likely to get sanction for 150 seats. Next year, there is a possibility that Vadnagar Medical College will get commissioned and 150 more seats will be added to the state's kitty.

It is also important to note that students in the state have expressed their anxiety over making NEET mandatory for admissions in medical colleges. They have stages protest outside several examination centres. Gujarat is the only state which went ahead with the CET (GUJCET), as per scheduled date of May 10, after the SC verdict on state plea for holding common entrance test was rejected.

More than 68,000 aspirants appeared for the state-level exam, in hope of the examination gaining recognition later. The state government is reported to have approached the apex court again regarding the matter. In addition, it has also requested to conduct NEET in Gujarati.
