Gujarat Medical College: Clerk demands MBBS student to pay bribe for extra marks; Booked

Rajkot: A former clerk of CU Shah Medical College in Surendranagar has been booked for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 2.5 from a 3rd-year MBBS student while offering to increase marks. Asking for bribery, the clerk enticed the medico to alter his grades in the poorly performed semester exams.

The incident took place on March 3, 2018, and came to light after a video went viral purportedly showing a clerk demanding a bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh from the MBBS student.

It so happened that the MBBS student scored poor marks in a couple of subjects in the Second Semester examinations. The clerk, who was appointed in the student's section of the medical college, promised him to get his marks increased on payment of Rs 2.5 lakh.

Following the viral video, the clerk resigned from his post, questioning the authenticity of the video clip and claiming that he had been framed.

The MBBS student had recorded the entire act and lodged a complaint against the clerk. In 2018, an inquiry committee was constituted separately to look into the incident.

Police Inspector of Morbi unit of ACB Mukesh Jani told The Indian Express, "Nonetheless, as the college is affiliated to Saurashtra University, the varsity set up an inquiry committee to look into the incident."

Saurashtra University forwarded a CD containing the video clip to ACB in October 2018, requesting that the incident be investigated further. Therefore, ACB launched an inquiry and sent the CD to Forensic Science Laboratory, Rajkot for analysis that found the evidence to be genuine.

Thereafter, the clerk was nabbed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) based on material evidence verified by the Rajkot FSL.

It is reported that the clerk has been treated as a government employee for the purpose of the investigation, as the medical college is affiliated to Saurashtra University.

Talking to Ahmedabad Mirror, ACB officer Chauhan stated, "Altering grades of future doctors is a serious issue. We shall further investigate the matter and try to find out if anyone else was involved in the racket. We will also check if any such deals had been executed in the past."
