Grant Medical College seeks additional 44 Super-specialty seats

Mumbai: The Medical Council of India's(MCI), call for a one time increase of super specialty seats, under the revised teacher student ratio in medical colleges, for 2017-18, has had the state run JJ Hospital & Grant Medical College,Byculla responding enthusiastically. The college is seeking 44 extra seats for its postgraduate super specialty courses. Presently, the college has 15 seats and an application for more has been filed. This application follows the MCI's 19th May notification for the same.

The Institute is seeking an increase of 38 seats across 7 super specialties including , plastic surgery, paediatric surgery, urology, cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, neurology, and neurosurgery stated Grant Medical College, Dean, Dr T P Lahane.


The MCI's initiative is a response to the centre's wish to improve the poor doctor-patient ratio,in the super specialty field.


The JJ hospital is looking for 10 more seats in cardiology, as against the existing 3, while there is a need to increase 4 seats in neuro surgery which presently has a mere 1, added Dr Lahane.


Futhermore, there is demand for eight for cardiothoracic, three for plastic surgery. five for urology, and five for paediatric surgery.


"The JJ proposal will be sent to MCI on Tuesday, the last date for submission," Dr Pravin Shingare, Head Medical Education and Research told TOI. The JJ Group of Hospitals also have Cama, G T and St George's hospitals as part of their affiliations.
