Thane : Maharashtra Medical Education Minister Girish Mahajan has said the government will explore the possibility of setting up a medical college in tribal dominated Jawhar taluka of Palghar.

Mahajan made this announcement during his visit to Jawahar in the neighbouring district to take stock of the previaling situation there following large scale child deaths and other issues, according to a release issued by NGO Shramajivi Sanghatana.

In his meeting with the minister, founder of the NGO Vivek Pandit, who highlighted the malnutrition and child deaths in the region, held a discussion on the issues and submitted memorandum citing possible solutions.

The minister on the occasion assured that he would look into the issues and ensure that they are resolved, the release said.

Pandit in the meeting pointed out that the decision to upgrade the Patanghsha Kutir Hospital, a sub hospital at Jawhar, to 200 bedded hospital had been taken four years back but nothing has been done so far. If the hospital is upgraded with 300 beds and medical college given to the taluka it would serve the purpose of the medical needs.

To this the minister readily agreed and gave directions to the department officials accordingly, it said.

The minister also discussed the issue of availability of grains at the fair price shops, ashram schools.
