Nagpur: Couple of months after the Dental Council of India had written a letter to all the dental colleges of the country directing it to implement strict measures for curbing the ragging menace in their medical institutions three students, at the Government Dental College in the city have been caught red-handed ragging the junior students.
The case relates to three students, who allegedly engaged in ragging and bullying the students of the second and third year, as well as forcefully occupying their rooms. The accused students allegedly made the affected students live in reading rooms and made many reshufflings in the arrangement. They even took away the affected students cupboard forcefully.
Various complaints against the dental interns brought the matter to light. Acting on the same the anti-ragging committee made a surprise visit to the hostel and caught them red-handed. They found the affected students standing timidly on the corridor facing the floor for long.
Acting on the matter the dean of Government Dental College and Hospital (GDCH), Nagpur discontinued their internship and suspended them for ten days. The accused were also occupying the hostel rooms illegally who have now vacated the rooms forcefully.
"The members of the anti-ragging squad submitted a report regarding this to me. I had already issued many notices to these three students in the last four months to vacate the hostel as there was no place vacant for them. Interns and PG students get space in the hostel only if there are rooms left after admitting the BDS students. So, I told them again to vacate hostel in three days and informed their parents," Dr Ganvir, dean of GDCH told TOI.
He further added that the three accused students vacated the rooms after being warned of action against them. They were allotted 24 hours time to vacate the rooms.
As of now, the authorities have decided if after ten days, the three interns are found to be behaving themselves and there are no complaints of them visiting the hostel, their internship will be continued.
Sources further informed the daily that the college has taken a written apology from the interns. They had engaged in bullying and ragging one month back as well.
"Today, we held the meeting of the anti-ragging committee and all the heads of the departments and decided to temporarily discontinue their internship as a punishment. Their department postings have also been stopped. We will also be sending the report to the directorate of medical education and research (DMER) and the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS). The decision to continue the internship will be only mine," Dr Ganvir informed TOI.
