Chandigarh: The first free surgery under the ambitious 'Ayushman Bharat Scheme' was performed recently at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) by a team of doctors led by Professor Orthopaedics cum Medical Superintendent Dr Ravi Gupta.

The patient from Chandigarh, a 38-years-old man suffered multiple ligament injuries in the right knee after he fell from stairs.

The patient came to OPD as a referral case. Ligament injuries of the knee are serious injuries, which if not treated well can lead to damage of the knee joint. With this surgery, the patient is likely to have the near-normal function of the knee joint.

Since the patient belonged to the economically weak category, he was explained about the scheme in OPD itself and was admitted in GMCH under the 'Ayushman Bharat Scheme'.

The patient was promptly taken up by the Ayushman Bharat team of GMCH after the completion of online formalities related to the scheme.

With the launch of this scheme, the patient was able to afford the treatment in a timely manner without bearing the brunt of heavy medical expenditure.

Director Principal Prof BS Chavan said that 'Ayushman Bharat Scheme' is a boon for the economically weak patients who were earlier unable to afford advanced medical treatment.

He also clarified that GMCH is able to offer more than 1000 sanctioned packages under 'Ayushman Bharat Scheme'.
