GMC Telangana gets MCI permission

A new GMC Telangana ( also a teaching hospital) has received MCI nod. It will offer additional 150 medical seats in the state, beginning from this academic session itself. The new medical college hospital is set up at Mahabubnagar. This is the 6^th GMC in the state. With this development, the total number of seats offered in the state will increase to 1000-from the present 850 offered.

There are more GMCs at Hyderabad- Gandhi and Osmania, Warangal’s Kakatiya, Adilabad and Nizamabad.

According to the information given by Health Minister K. Laxma Reddy’s office to Hindu on Wednesday night, it would be the sixth medical college by the Government in the State and Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao would be soon laying the foundation stone for the college.

Terming it the State Formation Day to people of Telangana, Mr. Reddy said it was possible only because of the untiring efforts made by the Chief Minister with the Central Government and the MCI to get the requisite permissions.

The minister also implied that with the setting up of this new medical college in a backward district like Mahbubnagar, the government is enabling medical care for people in the district. A super specialty hospital would also be launched soon. Also, this news means more jobs created in the medical, para-medical segment.

This development spells some good news for the medical aspirants in the state. It was only recently that many state-run institutes had hit the MCI roadblock to offer increased seats for PG courses, or to start speciality courses. The reason for denial of MCI approval was lack of infrastructure and manpower in most of the state run medical colleges. There are more private medical colleges which have been denied permission by MCI regarding their approval on new specialty medical courses or increase in seats, on the same premise.

As a major consequence of MCI’s decision is the denial of approval to Gandhi Medical College to offer DM (Endocrinology) course in 2016-17. The council’s PG medical education committee (PMEC) took a decision in a meeting citing mostly deficiencies in manpower. Other colleges denied permission includes prominent names like Osmania Medical College and Kakatiya Medical College (KMC). PMEC noted many infrastructure and manpower issues with both the colleges.
