GMC Napur inspected by MCI for increased PG seat recognition
Nagpur: An inspection was conducted by the Medical Council of India at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for recognition of the increased post graduate seats in the college in the ongoing examination.
With the inspection for skin and venereal diseases and orthopaedics department already over, the council scheduled the inspection for forensic medicine on Wednesday.
Highlighting the increase in seat strengths in various departments College , Dean Dr A Niswade stated that 3 seats had been increased in Skin and venereal diseases,5 in orthpaedics and another 3 in forensic medicine.
"Since the examination is conducted on the basis of MUHS (Maharashtra University of Health Sciences) norms, the MCI team basically checks the available infrastructure, manpower, arrangements for examination, clinical material. It also ensures that at least one of the examiners is from outside the state," said Dr Niswade.
With the skin department , holding a single seat in 2010 , which increased to 3 in 2014 and presently has reached 5, another inspection is due after three years when students appear for the examination. Dr R P Singh, the department head revealed that the team was satisfied that the seats would be recognized.
Dr Sajal Mitra, the orthopaedics head, said the MCI inspectors didn't check manpower and infrastructure alone but also the overall turnover of patients, the teaching schedules etc.
"They see whether there is enough clinical material or patients with each teacher and whether or not so many students are needed. Our department is generally overloaded, so there are enough surgeries for the students to support," said Dr Mitra.
The dean said the college at present has a strength of 167 PG seats, of which 133 are for degree courses, 5 for super-speciality and 34 for diploma courses. He said Maximum seats are allotted to general medicine (24) followed by 22 in general surgery and 13 in obstetrics and gynaecology.
Paediatrics and anaesthesia have 8 and 7 seats respectively. There are 20 clinical and non-clinical subjects in which the college offers post graduate degree. Super-specialty, carries are five seats in three subjects. MCh plastic surgery with two seats, DM cardiology with two seats and DM gastroenterology with one seat.
"We are trying for more PG seats. We are submitting back diploma courses and trying to get degree courses," said the dean to TOI.
