GMC Nagpur Gastroenterology Dept faces de-recognition on compliance issue

Nagpur: The Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH, Nagpur), super specialty wing’s Gastroenterology Department is facing a de-recognition threat from the Medical Council of India (MCI) on account of negligence and improper planning by the college.


An MCI inspection was conducted on August 20,2016 and the report submitted by it has now made the Post Graduate Medical Education Committee of MCI recommend derecognition of the Gastroenterology Department, due to prevailing deficiencies.


The Committee’s meeting minutes stated that if the college did not make amends on the inspection findings within a month, the department would be refrained from taking any further admissions for the post graduate course.The PG course initiated in 1990 was granted to the Government medical college hospital with- one seat.


The inspection at the GMCH Nagupur was conducted by Medical University of Health Science, Nasik.


Dr Abhimanyu Niswade, GMCH Dean, said , "While the students were having their exams, the committee had arrived to inspect all the facility of department."


According to inspection observations , no senior resident is posted inside the department. "This never came to our mind before, as until now the DM (doctor of medicine) students were acting as the senior residents. We are sure to comply with it in coming days."


Faculty promotion of Dr. Amol Samarth has also come under the scanner . According to the meeting’s minutes, "Dr Samarth is promoted as Associate professor after cut-off date, however details of research publications are not provided in the faculty table, hence it in not possible to verify whether their promotion is as per regulation or not."


Another point highlighted was details of ICU beds not being provided when asked for by the committee.


The deficiencies pointed out in the meeting minutes are to be overcome within a period of four weeks.

Dr. Niswade said, "Gastroenterology department of out college is being counted as one of the most equipped among all the GMCHS of the state and has the most updated equipment costing in cores, " as reported by the TOI.
