New Delhi: The recent Meeting of the MCI PG committee ( before its dismantle) spelt out disappointment for the Government Medical College, Chandigarh after it denied the medical college increase in seats in majority PG medical courses for which it had applied.

The medical college managed to get the committee's nod for Increase of seats in MD(Forensic Medicine) course from the academic session 2019-20 from 3(Three) to 5(Five) students per year till the first batch admitted against the increased number appears in the final examination of the said course.

It is reported that the MCI PG committee in its meeting held on 21 August, 2018 considered the applications made by GMCH, Chandigarh towards increase in seats in the following courses

  • Increase of seats in MD(Community Medicine)

  • Increase of seats in MD(Forensic Medicine)

  • Increase of seats in MD(Paediatrics)

  • Increase of seats in MD(Psychiatry)

  • Increase of Seats in MD ( Gynaecology and Obstretrics)

However, the council after considering the Council Assessor’s Report (27/07/2018) noted a number of deficiencies in all the departments. These include deficiencies in terms of appointment of faculties as well as their promotion as per MCI rules.

For instance, in case of MD Gynae course, the council noted that the Head of the Department is Dr. Atul Sachdev, who is Professor of Medicine Department and hence he cannot be Head of Obstetric & Gynaecology department.

Similarly, in the Psychiatry Department, the council noted that Dr. B.S. Chavan is the Head of the Department as well as Dean of the college. This is not as per regulations.

Many other deficiencies were elaborated in the minutes of the meeting as pointed out in the assessment report. Based on the deficiencies, the council decided not to give permission to the medical college for increasing seats in the courses of MD (Community Medicine), MD(Paediatrics), MD(Psychiatry) as well asMD ( Gynaecology and Obstretrics)

The committee, satisfied with the infrastructure and manpower required for the increase in seats for MD(Forensic Medicine), decided to recommend to the Central Govt. to issue Letter of Permission for Increase of seats in MD(Forensic Medicine) course at Government Medical College, Chandigarh under Punjab University, Chandigarh u/s10A of the I.M.C. Act, 1956 prospectively i.e. from the academic session 2019-20 from 3(Three) to 5(Five) students per year till the first batch admitted against the increased number appears in the final examination of the said course.

The Teaching Institution was also advised to apply for recognition of the qualification for the additional increased intake at the time of first available examination as per the provision of Section 11(2) of the IMC Act, 1956.

With the newly constituted Board of Governors for running the Medical Council of India, the above decisions will now be forwarded to the BOG for final approval
