Full operations at the 6 new AIIMS to commence in June

New Delhi: All the six new AIIMS in the country will be fully operational from June onwards, bringing relief to the patients of Bihar, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh The upcoming facilities are almost equipped with bed strength, modern machines, and operation theatres.


The six cities to have these units in operation include Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Raipur, Patna, and Rishikesh.


With the faculty recruitment process almost complete at all the six, 800 doctors are at present, on rolls in all. This number is likely to rise to 1200 by June, stated a Health Ministry official.


The bed capacity at the six for the present is 2,700 and will reach 5,760 by June. Equipping each AIIMS with 960 beds, sufficient to start operations with, the official stated.


According to the latest Millennium Post analysis, the major improvement in equipping these facilities took off after 2016. The 348 faculty members for all six AIIMS in January 2016 rose to an approximate 800 in January 2018. The bed strength witnessed a quantum jump from 1,289 beds in January 2016, to 2,700 by January 2018.


Similarly, all the six new AIIMS conducting 10,666 major surgeries in January 2016 had the figure rising to 21,229 in January 2018. Likewise, 9,198 minor surgeries were performed until January 2018, as against the 4,495 such procedures calculated in January 2016.


Speaking about the steep rise in performance at the six units the official told the daily, "It is the result of dedicated efforts by concerned officials. Since getting the faculty of the AIIMS-like standard is really a great challenge, so we conducted several rounds of meetings to finalize the appointments and took key decisions such as selection of doctors from AIIMS-Delhi and abroad."


Visits of faculty and paramedics from upcoming institutes to AIIMS, Delhi for exposure to latest techniques and best practices in healthcare and medical education, have also been worked out, the official revealed.


52 faculty members have been appointed for Patna with an additional 86 in the offing.
