Five PG seats granted recognition in GMC Nagpur

Nagpur: The Medical Council of India (MCI), has approved five post graduate (PG) seats in the Government Medical College and Hospital, Nagpur (GMCH) recently. This approval includes two seats in radiotherapy and three in the ENT department. An announcement to this effect has also been given on the MCI website.

The approval brings the much awaited relief to the two concerned departments of Radiotherapy and ENT, as the approvals for the five seats had been withheld periodically for not being able to fulfill certain MCI norms.

Earlier in 2014, two PG seats that were introduced in 2011 were de-recognized by the MCI, for the want of departmental publications, senior residents and equipment informed Prof Krishna Kamble . However,the de- recognition decision was reverted by the body, once again on 1st July, 2016 after the college submitted its compliance report. A notification in this regard was issued on Thursday.

Since the inception of the PG radiotherapy course, six batches have joined and three have already finished. As the course has the MCI recognition , doctors who pass out from here can practice anywhere in the country and not restrict themselves to the state. The avenue of competitive exams like the UPSC and MPSC are also open for them , besides teaching positions.

The GMCH, is believed to be also wanting to increase its present PG strength from 110 to 163 and has prepared a proposal for submission to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) in different subjects.However, an MUHS clearance is essential before it is sent to the MCI for consent. TOI adds that a 53 seat up gradation is unlikely to happen in the near future, as there are faculty issues in the college.
