DU Professor seeking MBBS admission for ward Cheated of Rs 17.5 lakh, Four Held

New Delhi: In yet another case of miscreants duping parents of MBBS aspirants under the pretext of providing a seat at a medical college, an Anthropology Professor attached to Delhi University (DU) is now reported to have fallen the latest victim.

The professor had approached the police in November after the accused didn’t show up with the MBBS seat allotment letter. He alleged that the managers and other staff of a private company cheated him of Rs 17.5 lakh under the pretext of offering an MBBS course at Bengaluru- based Sapthagiri Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre. Later the police arrested the accused “agents”.

“Four were arrested for allegedly duping a Delhi University professor of Rs 17.5 lakh after promising to get his daughter admitted to a medical college,” police confirmed to the news agency PTI.

The Anthropology Professor at DU sought MBBS admission for his daughter at any of a reputed medical college. “The complainant’s daughter got a call from a representative of the company in June, promising admission to a reputed college in Bengaluru after the course. She was also promised that the money would cover the cost of admission, hostel, commission etc,” the FIR mentioned.

The professor was asked to pay the amount in instalments, and the accused sent receipts along with post-dated cheques for each instalment. The professor paid around Rs 4 lakh in the first instalment and later, he made two payments. The accused then took more than Rs 7 lakh, reports The Indian Express.

The professor went with his family to college and was asked by the accused to wait at the canteen for the allotment letter, but the “agents” didn’t show up.

On the basis of this complaint, the police have traced and arrested four persons till now. Ajeet Kumar (26), Manish Kumar (26), Idharth (25) and Shahzad Mussaraf (25) met the complainant, Prakash Ranjan Mondal, on several occasions and took money from him, police stated. Two accused are MBA students, one of them is a BSC physics student, while the fourth is pursuing a BA course.

“The accused were traced with the help of their phones. They had given post-dated cheques to the complainant, which could not be encashed… The complaint also mentions the names of other accused persons, who are yet to be arrested,” a police officer told the daily.
