Doon Medical College up for mandatory yearly MCI renewal permission for next four years

Uttarakhand: Even though MCI and Health Ministry have recently granted permission to Doon Medical College to offer 150 MBBS seats from 2016-17 academic year; however, the government medical college will be subject to intense scrutiny by MCI for the next four years. It will be subject to MCI inspection for renewal of MBBS seats each year (in the next 4 years). During the inspection, MCI will note the upgraded facilities at the medical college, for the council to give permission for it to continue to be functional.


In the LOP dated June 8, the Under Secretary to the Government of India, Pradip Kumar Pal, has implied that the permission given to Doon Medical College is only for one year. The renewal of permission will depend, only after the annual target achieved are verified, as per the indication in the scheme. There will be a continuous process of renewal of permission, sunject to completion of setting up of Doon GMC and expansion of hospital facilities. Then only the Doon GMC will be granted a formal recognition. The Doon GMC will also reserve 15% MBBS seats for the all India quota.


When contacted by The Pioneer, the Director, medical education, Dr Ashutosh Sayana admitted that the medical college has to seek four renewals of the permission before a final recognition is granted to it. He informed that the facilities in the associated hospital and medical college would have to continuously up-graded for these renewals.


Dr Sayana in addition implied that the 300 beds occupancy in the attached hospital to Doon GMC will have to be increased to 750, including other up-gradation.


Haldwani Medical College in the state has also received a formal recognition from the union ministry of health and family welfare. A formal recognition means that there will be no MCI inspection required or next 5 years.
