Telangana: Dental student commits suicide, blamed college for Harassment

Hyderabad: A 33-year-old Dental College student allegedly committed suicide by hanging at his residence in Madannapet police station limits on Monday.


According to police, the student was identified as Mirza Asim Ahmed Baig . He is studying final year Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) in Panineeya Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital

In his suicide note, the deceased stated that he was alleged harassed by the college staff. . "We found the suicide note in his room. He failed in an exam, after which the college authorities have been harassing him to pay exam fees. We are checking if it led to his suicide," Madannapet inspector D Nagesh told TOI


A case has been registered and an investigation is on, police stated adding that they are going to investigate for the involvement of the college . "We will see if harassment and negligence on the part of the college has any role in Mirza's suicide, " the inspector added


The college authorities denied any harassment on their part.

P Karunakar, principal, informed TOI Mirza had been lying low for the last several weeks and was being counselled by staff members. "He did not appear for one of his exams and failed in a theory exam. He was trying hard to cope up with studies and we had given him good marks in the practicals. But, he had been seen distraught in the last few weeks," Karunakar told the daily.

He said there is a huge gap of eight years between Mirza's bachelor degree in dental surgery and masters. "We tried to help him in every possible way and counselled him. He was depressed due to academics. I have no idea why he has mentioned the college in his suicide note," he added.
