Delhi now has 1250 MBBS seats- RML Hospital gets nod to start UG Medical college with 100 seats in 2019-20

New Delhi: The capital is soon going to offer another 100 MBBS seats to NEET 2019 aspirants with the premier PGIMER-RML Hospital getting a nod to start MBBS course from this academic year.

This comes after the Union Health Ministry has given permission to the Centre-run Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital to start an MBBS course with 100 medical seats for the academic session 2019-20.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported about the the prestigious Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital (RML Hospital) which currently imparts education for various PG medical courses moving towards offering MBBS course.

To facilitate this plan, the hospital had earlier sought the approval of the apex medical regulator, Medical Council of India (MCI).

According to many faculty members, the hospital was asked by the Health Ministry to work on the project about two years ago to overcome the shortage of doctors. A detailed project report was prepared, requirements were identified and recently the hospital moved the proposal for necessary approvals.

Now success has come the the hospital, in terms of the nod to offer MBBS course from this academic year. According to a senior official at the hospital, the course will initially have 100 seats and 50 more will be added soon.

The hospital has the necessary infrastructure and the faculty to start the course, officials said.

"I am directed...to convey the approval of the Competent Authority for starting of MBBS course with intake of 100 seats at the PGIMER and Dr RML hospital from the Academic session 2019-20," said a letter addressed to RML Medical Superintendent Dr V K Tiwari.

RML Hospital, formerly known as Willingdon Hospital, was established by the British for their staff and had only 54 beds. At present, the hospital has more than 1500 beds in its facility.

At present, Delhi has 17 medical colleges, out of which only 9 offer MBBS course with 1,150 seats including

  • All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) – 50

  • Army College of Medical Sciences- 100

  • Dr Baba Sahib Ambedkar Medical College-100

  • Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research-100

  • Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC)-250

  • Lady Hardinge Medical College -200

  • North Delhi Municipal Corporation Medical College -50

  • University College of Medical Sciences and GTB Hospital- 150

  • Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital-150
