Madhya Pradesh: The Dental Council of India(DCI), has finally taken upon itself to take action against various dental colleges including the only government dental college of the state, Government College of Dentistry, Indore, for not following the mandatory norms required for maintaining transparency in admission and monitoring education work in colleges.

Action against colleges playing truant will be taken under the Dentistry ACT, 1948, which may result in institutional cancellation or suspension of DCI affiliation. The DCI following in the footsteps of the MCI had also ordered the installation of biometric machines, in order to keep a check on faculty attendance and prevent ghost faculty presence during the time of DCI inspections, for affiliations.

The Dental Council had also ordered for submission of a three monthly, biometric attendance record to keep a check on college faculty head count, activities, and performance.

Despite repeated reminders by the Council between May 2013 and June 2017, the colleges failed to live up to expectations. The colleges' failure to live up to prescribed norms and also submit the attendance report to the Council ended up in the calling for disciplinary action.

“We have installed biometric machines in our college and now, planning to connect it with CCTV camera which will send the feed to the Dental Council of India. However, we have not sent any biometric attendance report to them yet,” Principal, Government College of Dentistry (Indore), Dr Deshraj Jain informed the Free Press Journal

The DCI upset over the gross neglect of instruction by colleges at a meeting on October 7, 2017, decided to issue a final warning asking colleges to abide by instruction or face resultant action. The final notification in this regard to colleges was sent on November 1, giving a 21-day deadline for submission of the requisite documents.

As per the orders issued by Dr Sabyasachi Saha, the DCI Secretary, “Quarterly biometric attendance report is one of the mandatory requirements to track records of absenteeism, frequent migration, punctuality of the teaching faculty and also, run dental colleges as per DCI norms.”

The orders further stated that “A last and final opportunity has been given to the erring dental colleges to furnish the requisite quarterly biometric attendance report of their teaching staff, within 21 days, failing which necessary action as per Dentists Act, 1948 shall be taken,” reports FPJ.

Following is the list of colleges that has not followed the DCI strictures:

Meanwhile, Dr Jain said they would be sending the biometric attendance record to the dental council soon enough and further updates would be submitted in a regular manner. However, the deadline for sending the report comes to an end on Monday, November 20th.
