Pathankot: Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh assured students of Chintpurni Medical College that his government will ensure their careers were not risked due to the mismanagement of college authorities.

He said steps were being taken to shift the students to other medical institutions in Punjab.

Singhs remarks came during a meeting with the students after he arrived in Pathankot for a rally of ex-servicemen. The Medical Council of India (MCI) has ordered the college to suspend admissions for two sessions due to alleged lack of infrastructure and staff.

He said the college is owned by the BJP candidate for Gurdaspur Lok Sabha by-election, Swarn Salaria.

The students complained to the chief minister they were being threatened by Salaria to pay fee even though the classes were suspended.

Singh assured the students that nobody would harm them.

"He's no longer in control of the college and won't be able to touch you," he told the students.

The chief minister told the students that the state government had sought permission from the MCI to shift them to other medical colleges in the state. He said the MCI approval was expected soon and the process would start thereafter.

Assuring the students that his government would do everything to safeguard their careers, he said if need be separate exams would be held in case the MCI approval does not come through before the examinations begin in November.

Speaking to reporters after meeting the students, he lashed out at Salaria for his alleged failure to run the college. "Look at these students. What is their fault?" he said, adding that Salaria had failed to manage his own college, jeopardizing the future of so many students, so where was the question of him doing anything for the constituency.
