Chandigarh: Government Medical College to upgrade its Swine Flu lab

Amritsar: The Swine flu testing laboratory of the local Government Medical College is going in for an upgradation. The principal of the college, Mr.BS Pal said the up gradation exercise would enable them to test 24 different kinds of viruses instead of the present 16 conducted. He also revealed that the college was trying to get the much delayed recognition for its laboratory which was started two years ago.

According to the Tribune the laboratory is also in for an up gradation and a proposal to this effect is soon to be sent to the health ministry.

"The ministry's approval is bound to help in terms of increasing both manpower and funds," clarified Mr. Bal. In the absence of labs in the regions samples were being sent to P.G.I Chandigarh, or private labs in Delhi. The up gradation according to college authorities was bound to help the state and the surrounding regions of J & K and Himachal Pradesh.

"Last year the Microbiology Department of the college had conducted a survey of various water-borne diseases prevalent in different parts of the state. The upgradation of virus testing lab would be a boon for the people," Mr. Bal informed.
