Patna: Eight Departments of the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) have been denied permission to start MD and MS courses by the Medical Council of India.

The Council had conducted an inspection of the 8 departments of the IGIMS on August 9 and 10, 2017. The eight departments surveyed by the Council were: community medicine, surgery, general medicine, ENT, Pathology, radio therapy, and radiology.

"The real reason was relaxation in criteria for the appointment to senior faculty posts. The MCI team took it seriously and it turned down the request to start new courses," sources in IGIMS revealed on Wednesday.

When queried, IGIMS Director, Dr N R Biswas told this correspondent that appointments were made in accordance with the AIIMS, New Delhi rules, which call for 3 years of experience for the appointment of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor.

"According to MCI norms, a four-year experience is required. The cause stated in the MCI letter is some deficiency of staff. We will meet this deficiency and set the issue right as soon as possible," he added.

IGIMS Dean, Dr K H Raghvendra said the MCI requirements would be met. "The institute will follow the procedure as per MCI guidelines and the required manpower deficiency will be met at the earliest," he said.

Dr Sunil Kumar Singh, an IGIMS, Board Member told the TOI "It is only a matter of time, that the infrastructure, manpower, and equipment will be as per the requirement of the MCI before inspection. We hope to start these courses from next year."
