Bengal: 13 PG medical seats in the state have been laid down by the MCI. The reason cited for the downsize is the state of poor infrastructure; as a result of which students scheduled for taking online counseling for state seats are going to be disappointed.

Further updates confirm eight seats of MD (medicine) in Medical College and one seat of MD (radiology) in NRS Medical College has been reduced. Besides, one MD (pathology) seat in North Bengal Medical College and three MS seats in various other institutes has been reduced.

Overall, there are 1050 PG seats in Bengal, whose admissions are held by the National Board of Examination (NBE). Rest of the admissions is hosted by West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS). Under the reservation quota, 40% is for service doctors, and there are other categories too.

MCI had even threatened to reduce 400 MBBS seats in the state due to poor infrastructure.

As quoted by TOI, a WBUHS official said "Normally permission is granted for MD courses after MCI inspection and later MCI visits to ascertain the quality of teaching and infrastructure. But the medical colleges need to ensure proper standard and enough teachers, which is lagging now for running specialised courses." KP Sinha, controller of examination, WBUHS said that they will appeal to MCI to restore seats.
