Vadodara: Baroda Medical College has been granted the Medical Council of India (MCI), approval for 70 more MBBS seats."MCI has informed on its website that we have received the nod to offer 250 MBBS seats from the academic year 2018-19," said Dr A T Leuva, Dean, Baroda Medical College.

The Council’s Executive Committee had met on December 14, 2017. "Now, MCI will inform about its decision to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the government of India which in turn will intimate us about the decision," said Leuva.

Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Dr Hemant Mathur revealed that a four-member team of Council assessors had visited the medical college on December 5-6, 2017 and submitted a report after taking into account all the aspects, in accordance with MCI rules, reports TOI.

In July last year, MCI's syndicate members had given approval to a seat increase proposal for undergraduate intake at the college. This decision was taken after a special faculty meeting held at the Faculty of Medicine recommended that seats be increased from 180 to 250.

A similar attempt was made in 2010 as well. However, at that time the effort had fallen through, as the Council had highlighted various infrastructural shortcomings, thereby, declining approval.
